Radcliff, Kentucky
HISTORY During the pre-war years in the 1930's, Camp Henry Knox became Fort Knox and began to expand. Fort Knox encompassed the existing towns of Stithton and New Stithton, forcing those residents to relocate to the nearby town of Radcliff. During World War II, thousands of soldiers poured into Fort Knox for training. Radcliff boasted a USO and provided entertainment for troops before they left for war. After World War II ended, Radclif continued to grow. Hardin County Water District #1 was created in 1953 and went on to become the major source for all of Hardin County's fresh water. A fire department was organized in 1955. Finally, in 1956, Radcliff was incorporated and granted status as a city. INTERESTING FACTS Radcliff is located in a dry county (Hardin). However, it is commonly referred to as being "moist" because drink sales are allowed in restaurants that serve more than 100 people. Radcliff is commonly misspelled as Radcliffe, Ratcliffe, Ratcliff, and Radclifft. Radcliff holds the distinction of having the most fast food restaurants per square mile in the United States.
